What Are You Looking For in Your Personal Life?

“Every morning feels like a mad rush – I wake up late, I grab a quick breakfast where I can, zoom out the door, and it always feels like I’m one step behind. I’ve tried setting multiple alarms, moving the phone to the other side of the room…nothing seems to work! What am I missing? How do I step out of this hamster wheel that’s holding me back?”
“I get so frustrated with myself – I have all of these ideas inside me, and then when I do get a moment to myself away from work or chores, I dive straight into browsing Facebook, watching the TV or switching on a movie…I know it goes nowhere and then all of a sudden I feel lost again. Why do I keep doing this? I know if I just followed through on my ideas and actually put pen to paper, I could achieve so much more. How do I make sure I use my time the way I really want to?”
“Sometimes I question and wonder whether I really have any ambition. I’ve always kind of plodded along and gotten by. I’d love to have a bigger sense of what I could achieve in life, it’s just that every time I try to create that vision, something holds me back and says ‘no, it’s not for you.’ I’ve volunteered in the past and done some great projects that I enjoyed, and I see other people really going for great things, but I just feel like I don’t have that thing that gets me out of bed in the morning. Right now I’m just getting up to get paid. What am I missing? How do I find my own sense of purpose?”
“I know that 10 out of 10 times I will follow through on stuff that other people ask me to do, but then when it comes to doing stuff for myself, I always seem to fall by the wayside. It’s like other peope’s agendas matter more than my own. In fact when I’m around others, it feels like I’m being half the person I could be, like I’m holding back for fear of something, like I can’t actually say what’s on my mind or present the ideas I have – I know they’ll probably get shot down anyway. I just wish I could bust open this invisible wall and just feel more confident to be myself. How can I build that within me?”
“Why do my days seem like a neverending tennis rally? Bouncing around all over the place from this meeting to that email to squeezing lunch in between stuff! I’d love to slow it all down and get control of things, but I feel like if I do that, I’ll drop loads of balls and miss out on the things that need to get done, maybe let other people down. How can I take control of my day so that I’m not rushing around from pillar to post every day…surely something’s got to give?”

    “It always seems to be one or the other! Either I can focus on my work life and get the promotion and respect I deserve from my job, or I can build my friendships and personal relationships, but I can’t do both! Surely there must be a way to bring the two together?” 
    “I’m not happy with the way I look and I know that I can be so much fitter and healthier. I used to be able to do so much sport, run about, be much more active and enjoy myself when I was younger, but I don’t seam to have the time or the motivation to do that now. How can I change my day-to-day life in a way that will really work, so I can feel more alive?!” 
    “Work and life seem to completely absorb all my time and effort at the moment, that I never have any time to consider cooking a ‘balanced meal’ or go out for a run. Even just being more active by ‘getting off the bus a stop earlier’ has had a limited effect. What can I do about all this?” 
    “There are so many demands on my finances, and there just doesn’t seem to be enough hours or shifts in the day to make up and cover what I’m spending. I mean I work extremely hard and it’s not like I have a Ferrari on the driveway! I just can’t seam to earn enough to keep afloat.” 
    “I’m stretched at the moment and I’d like the chance to help others overcome problems, while relieving some of my own financial challenges. Is there any way in which I can do both? I feel I have a lot of value to add and I’d like to optimise my potential.”

    What Are You Looking for in Your Relationships?

    “I really struggle to connect with other people, at work and even amongst my friends. I only have a couple of close friends who really know me but everyone else is more like an acquaintance I hang out with now and again. I don’t know why it is but I find it really difficult to understand people who I don’t click with straight away, I never know where they’re coming from. I’ve realised I tend to be quite cold and distant or dismissive of them and because of this I often tend to alienate people this way. I’d love to be able to get closer to people and understand them more but I don’t know where to start.”
    “My life at home with my family is far from what I’d like it to be. We tend to argue a lot and there is regular drama between all of us. I really want things to be better between us all and I’d love us to be able to get on better and to share more with each other, but I just don’t know where or how to start changing things.” 
    “It feels like everyone I work with thinks differently to me, they’re quite selfish and cynical people and their energy often brings me down. I don’t feel I connect with any of them and I’m pretending to fit in. I would love to be able to work with people who are positive and inspiring, who want to be creative and work together to help each other.”
    “As they get older I’m finding my kids are more influenced by their school friends and the media. I’m struggling to connect with them and I don’t feel like they really listen to me anymore. I know they have some difficulties at school but they don’t come to me to talk about things. I’d love to know how I can connect with them again and be a better parent.”
    “I don’t know why but my relationships never seem to last longer than a year or so. Things keep coming to an end because we always end up arguing and falling out and I don’t know how to change this. I would love to be able to have a really close relationship with someone where we can work through our differences and really understand and care for each other more.

    “I am bored with my current job and it’s really starting to frustrate me now. I know I am capable of doing so much more, but yet I lack the opportunity to put these skills to use. It seems like I’m just going through the motions and if I don’t change my situation I’m scared I’ll forget the things I worked so hard to learn.”
    “I have a decent job which pays the bills and allows me to be relatively comfortable. However, I feel that the stress I have at work does not compensate for this. Recently I have been thinking it is likely that it will be at least 30 years before I can think about retirement. Then I’ve been asking myself, do I want to spend all that time doing what I am currently doing for a living? How many times have I felt really happy with my job? To be honest, I am scared of asking myself these questions because I know the answer already. I’m aware that my main problem is fear; fear of the unknown, fear to jeopardise my family stability, fear to fail. Nevertheless I’m convinced I have the potential to do something more meaningful. The problem is that I don’t know where to start.”
    “My current job’s fine, but I don’t really feel like I’m progressing in my career. Sometimes it feels like I’m hopping from one job to the next rather than progressing in a clear direction. I look at the more senior roles that appeal to me, but I always seem to be lacking the experience they are looking for in the job spec. I’m sure I could perform these roles if I was given the opportunity, but I don’t know anyone who is able to give me a break and help me understand what I need to do in order to make the progress I want to make in my career.”
    “I find myself getting really frustrated in meetings. It seems like the management don’t really know or understand what’s really going on with the people on the frontline and our customers. Every time we raise concerns about the direction the company is going in we seem to be fobbed off with some excuse. It would be great to bring more people together to find a way to communicate what’s really going on so that management listens, but everyone has become cynical and so I feel my efforts would be wasted.”
    “I’m very ambitious and I’ve worked hard to get to where I am now. I know I want to become a director, but recently my progress seems to have slowed down significantly. Is there something I’m missing? I’d love to learn what it takes to get into the Boardroom quicker. I know I am as qualified as my peers, but the competition is intense. It is getting harder and harder to differentiate myself. I’d value the support of someone who’s achieved what I want to achieve, but I’m not sure who I can approach and why they would want to help me.”
    “My career is important to me, but so are my family and friends. We’ve just had a child and this has helped me see life very differently. I want to be the best possible parent, but I know I need to balance this with the need to pay the bills and ensure we have a comfortable lifestyle. Work continues to be demanding and I’m concerned that I am not spending as much time at home as I would like, let alone enjoy time with my friends. It’s hard to know how I can balance all these additional responsibilities I have.”

    Getting onto and accelerating up the career ladder can be a challenge by ourselves.

    What Are You Looking for in Business?

    “I really want to leave my job and I’m sick of always being told what to do. I want to start my own business. The office is so negative with all the politics and the bickering and I’m not being appreciated by my boss despite all the hard work I put in. It’s time to do my own thing. I’ve always dreamt of being my own boss and having the freedom to do what I want. I don’t know where to start though, I’m worried about failing, the risks involved and not having the right skills. I need the right support and guidance as well and the finance to get me going.”
    “I want to expand my business and take it to the next level. I want to be achieving my goals, not plodding along at a snail’s pace. I want to be reaching new markets, growing at a faster rate and really achieving a reputation as the go-to person in my industry. I just don’t know how to do this. I need more finance to drive the expansion and more customers. I really need the expertise from people that I can trust. I wish I had a mentor to guide me and to bounce ideas off. Sometimes I feel alone and not sure what to do.”
    “I’m fed up with not being able to trust people in business. Everyone is only looking after their own interests. I go to networking events and have a tower of business cards on my desk. However none of these people know who I am or what services I really need. They just want to sell me stuff. I want people that I can rely on and build solid trusting relationships with who can help me grow my business. I want people who can help get me the finances I need so that I can take my business to the next stage, rather than always worrying about cash flow. I want people that can help me find better business so that I can grow.”
    “I really struggle to find and keep good people. It’s a constant challenge that takes up my time and keeps me from focusing and growing my business. I’m scared that if I do find someone good and invest in their development, they will leave and go to a competitor. I really don’t want to be wasting my money in that case. However, I find that good people are really hard to come by and most people are very unrealiable. They are only here because they get paid. If I could find people that really cared about what we do, I know that I could grow my business into new markets and spend more time on the long term vision of the organisation and increase my profits dramatically.”
    “I do everything in my business and I am exhausted all the time. It wasn’t meant to be like this. There is always something that needs to be done and I don’t trust others to do it so therefore I have to do it. I end up having to do it all. It’s the marketing, the accounts, the sales, the admin, the recruiting. I wish I had the right people and teams to help me but I don’t know where to start or who I need. Maybe then I could actually become a leader and grow my business and achieve my goals, rather than firefighting all the time. I would love to know what people like Branson and Alan Sugar know and to be able to let my business function on its own without me always having to be there having to watch over people.”
    “I’ve built a highly profitable business with a great reputation and have a solid foundation as a business person. I even have a good network of people in my industry. It’s now time to take this to the next step. I want national and even international expansion, however I don’t want to lose control of my baby to Venture Capital or a Business Angel. I’m not giving away any of my business to anyone after all these years of hard graft. However I just don’t know what I need, to be able to expand it as quickly as I want and on the scale that I want. Consultants seem to charge an arm and a leg and I can tell they see me as just another fee, not as a person. I can tell they don’t care about my success or my business. I know if I had someone who cared and who I trusted, who had the experience and the strategies, my business would fly. I could then even work on launching other businesses that I have thought of.”

    “As I watch my own children play and enjoy the company of other kids I get a good feeling of friendship and care between them. Through the years as our children become older they change and their needs differ, but the one thing they need is a consistent level of care and attention. With an increasing number of young people struggling with crimes and problems that adults face like drugs; I feel that we need to ensure they are supported more at times when they are in desperate need. To empower a child in need means giving them the support, mentoring, courage and care to become independent and grow up to be well adjusted people. This is what I want for my children.”
    “I see what’s happening to kids all around me in my local area. Kids as young as 13 are harrassing the police, they’ve lost all respect. This isn’t the country I grew up in, and it’s time I did something. I’d love to get involved in some way, something meaningful that made a real impact. To know that I’ve made a difference to my community would be so fulfilling. Where do I start though? It always seems like there’s a mountain of admin in between people like me and the kids who need help!”
    “I’d love to make a positive difference to a young person who may not have support from the adults around them. I feel it’s so important to ensure young people get the right guidance growing up, I know it would’ve made a massive difference in my life. I am fortunate enough to be in a position where I feel I can now give back, but I’m still worried there may be situations that I may not be able to help with. What if I give some advice that leads to them making some big mistakes? I couldn’t live with myself if that happened.”
    “There seems to be so much going on in the world that I have no control over. So much damage and pollution that I’m concerned about and I don’t seem to be able to do anything about it. How can I make a change or even learn how it could happen?”
    “I know that I’m capable of so much more than what I am doing at the moment. I feel a lot of my skills and talents just aren’t being used properly or challenged in my current position and I’m looking for something that’s going to make my life more meaningful and fulfilling. I want to do something that’s going to make a difference in the world, to help others and help me to realise my potential.”
